Description: Researchers at Cardiff School of Art & Design have developed a new form of pictorial perspective based on the structure of human visual perception. Our goal is to digitally emulate the way we actually see the world and how we interact with it visually. The project has both pure research and applied components: we are carrying out novel work in mapping features of visual perception using artistic renderings of visual space, psychophysical and computational methods to gather primary data, model processes, and evaluate outcomes. In addition, we are developing prototype products that demonstrate the commercial potential of the process in a range of areas, including advertising, computer gaming, entertainment, medical, and communications.
The purpose of this PhD is to contribute to our research and development programme into the structure of visual perception and how it can be depicted in digital media. Using mathematical analysis and computer graphical modeling, the successful candidate will construct tools for synthesizing visual perception processes, generate three-dimensional environments and interactive systems, and build prototypes for potential applications. Opportunities may be available for collaboration with and placements in departments in leading Universities in the UK and overseas. The student will conduct their research under the supervision of Prof Dr Robert Pepperell and be part of a team consisting of artists, designers, technologists, and perceptual psychologists.
