Description: The NSF Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY seeks applicants for a postdoctoral research position in the area of smart room lighting visualization and control. The goal is to design a computer graphics simulation framework to pre-visualize and tune the parameters of an advanced lighting controller for a given illuminated environment.
The postdoc will be funded by a grant from an ERC industrial partner and will work closely with Dr. Richard Radke. The position is available immediately and is expected to be renewable through Spring 2016. The position mainly entails the design and implementation of a simulation framework for producing a computer-generated animation of the lighting in a room over time as it reacts to the presence of its occupants, accompanied by estimated measurements of source input, light sensor output, and energy usage. This framework substantially builds on existing ERC tools, but must be customized to the needs of the industrial partner.
A recent Ph.D. degree in computer science, electrical and/or computer engineering, or computational and/or applied mathematics is preferred. Critical skills include familiarity with computer graphics rendering and animation software related to photorealistic lighting (i.e., DIALux, Maya, 3ds Max), game design software (i.e., Unity Pro) and scientific programming (i.e., Matlab, C#). Experience with image processing, machine learning, pattern recognition, numerical methods, and/or GPU/parallel implementations is a plus. The candidate must also have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, and be prepared to work closely with colleagues from both Rensselaer and industry.
