Title: PhD student position in Magnetic Resonance Lung Image RegistrationPosted: August 11, 2014
Company/Institution: Medical Image Analysis Center, University of Basel
Location: Basel, Switzerland
Department: Department of Biomedical Engineering

Description: Within the scope of this project at the Medical Image Analysis Center (MIAC), University of Basel, we are developing novel image registration methods allowing to spatially align lung MR imaging data acquired using our in-house MR imaging sequence. Significant progress in medical image registration has been made in the last two decades. Many approaches have been proposed registering 2D and 3D images even when the two images are from different imaging modalities. Much of this progress is thanks to improved interpolation schemes and similarity measures such as mutual information. Registering lung images is, however, still a problem due to the large deformations the lung undergoes during the breathing cycle. A further complicating factor is the discontinuities in the motion field seen at the lung boundaries. Despite the clinical need for better registration algorithms for lung, only limited research has gone into this field. The focus of this PhD. thesis will be on developing novel techniques to automatically register two- and three-dimensional lung imaging data. The main challenge of this project will be to develop and implement a variational framework for registration of lung images accurately. The candidate must have a strong background in mathematics, good communication skills, the ability to combine basic research activities with the needs of clinicians and be willing to work in a clinical environment. We are looking for a motivated, proactive person with a background in mathematics, physics or other related fields. The candidate will also have solid programming skills, as well as a good background in general engineering mathematics. An M.Sc degree or comparable previous experience is required to join the PhD program at our University.
