Description: A funded PhD position is available to develop novel computational methods for image formation, pre-processing and analysis. This is a very active area of research with a wide range of applications. Topics of interest are structured illumination, coded apertures, light field photography, geometrical superresolution, image segmentation, wavelet denoising, and methods for image and signal recovery from sparse and incomplete data. Target application areas include medical imaging, agri-tech and sensing instrumentation.
The successful candidate will be based at the University of Kent's main campus in Canterbury as part of the Forensic Imaging Group and will also benefit from working with researchers in the Applied Optics Group. Co-supervision will be provided by Prof. Adrian Podoleanu (Applied Optics). Some aspects of the project will involve working with a Kent based company specialising in LIDAR and Raman instrumentation.
This PhD Studentship is due to start in September 2015.
Entry requirements and Funding: Applicants should have or expect to obtain a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science or a related subject. This is a 50th Anniversary Scholarship, which will be offered at the standard UK Research Councils' rate (currently £13,863; to cover living costs) and will additionally cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate (currently £3,996 per annum). The Scholarship will also involve undertaking teaching duties (demonstrating) during the period of study.
