Description: The Center for Learning and Visual Computing at Ecole Centrale Paris is searching to recruit two highly-motivated PhD candidates/PostDocs in object recognition starting as soon as possible (ideally in September 2013).
The Center for Visual Computing involves 10 faculty members working in computer vision, machine learning and medical imaging. Successful applicants will be located at the ECP campus while also being part of the GALEN team of INRIA-Saclay, working with Prof.
The candidates will work on pose estimation and 3D category learning from RGB+Depth (Kinect-style) data. The two core themes of their research will be (a) computational efficiency through discrete optimization and (b) high accuracy through machine learning. We are also interested in problems relevant to feature extraction, descriptor construction, segmentation and surface matching for surfaces, already pursued in our on going work
This research will be conducted in the context of two research European collaborative programs in robotics. The first project, MOBOT involves the accurate estimation and tracking of human pose, as well as action recognition, using RGB+D data and its use for mobility assistance of the elderly.
The second project, RECONFIG involves the localization and segmentation of 3D object categories from RGB+D data.
We are searching for candidates with a demonstrated interest and background in applied mathematics (optimization algorithms, probability, machine learning and signal/image processing), while good coding skills, and in particular programming on GPUs, will be an important advantage. PhD applicants should have completed, or be near to completing a masters in electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or a closely related subject, or else, a five-year Diploma of Engineering and some research experience in relevant problems.
