The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta is inviting applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in imaging science and technology. This six-month project, entitled "Automated Screening of Canola Seeds using GPU-based Deep Learning: A Functional Prototype", focuses on the research and development, in collaboration with an industry partner, of a microscopy-based system to image seed samples and identify contaminants, i.e., unwanted species, in real time, using multilayer convolutional neural networks, i.e., deep learning.
Conditional on ongoing support from the industry partner and granting agencies, postdoctoral employment may be possible beyond this project. Feasibility of the approach has been demonstrated already in a previous project, primarily using MATLAB programs and not in real time. The previous postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Fernando Saccon, who consented to sharing his contact details, went on to an excellent position in local industry.
- Design, implement, and test C/C++ and MATLAB programs, based on multilayer convolutional neural networks, i.e., deep learning, to segment and classify seeds from optical microscopy images;
- Exploit parallel processing, using standard graphics processing units (GPUs), to enable the above programs to run in soft real time on Windows-based desktop and/or laptop computers;
- Design, implement, and test an interface, using 3D printed (or machined) parts and a third-party conveyor belt, to ferry seed from a seed counter through the field of view of an optical microscope.
- Document and communicate work internally and with the industry partner.
The applicant should hold, or be receiving very soon, a PhD in imaging science and technology or a related area. The cover letter should explain how the applicant's experience makes them ideal for this position.
