Title: Vision and machine learning summer internPosted: February 25, 2014
Company/Institution: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Location: Berkeley, Ca

Description: Imaging and Bioinformatics Lab, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has an open position for a summer intern in the area of computational biology, high content screening, and computational histopathology. Initial tasks will be porting existing matlab code to C++ followed by segmentation of histology sections at multiple end points. These ends points will be associated with the corresponding molecular profiles, such as gene expression and methylation data, for discovery of potential biomarkers. Applicants are required to have a strong background in low level vision and machine learning, skills in developing high performance systems, and the ability to work in a large scale program project. There are many opportunities for thesis topics and previous summer interns have consistently published in high profile conferences and journals.

Application Instructions: To develop state of art techniques for quantitative analyses of multicellular systems, which are imaged through optical microscopy. Our programs aim to elucidate indices that are predictive of the outcome from a large scale cohort of tumor sections. There is a clear opportunity to work with pathologists and other developers for method development and validation, and having an impact on disease treatment. Typically, students are can have a publication by the end of their internship. For more information, see http://vision.lbl.gov
