The Smart Interaction, Mobile Intelligence, and Multimedia Technologies (SiMiT lab) lab is looking for graduate students, starting from Fall 2014/2015 semester, interested in Facial Image Processing & Computer Vision. The SiMiT lab conducts research on computer vision and pattern recognition problems with the focus on face analysis and with the applications in human computer interaction, gaming, health, multimedia retrieval, and telecom industry within the scope of the international and industrial research projects. The prospective students must satisfy the following conditions: Interest in computer vision and pattern recognition research. Eager to learn, self-motivated and a team player. Able to read and write papers in English. Able to document produced work well.
The candidates satisfying the following conditions will be preferred: Background in computer vision and pattern recognition. C++ programming experience under Linux.
Familiarity with OpenCV.
For the outstanding candidates, scholarships are available. The amount of base scholarship is 1500 TL/month for M.S. students and 1800 TL/month for Ph.D. students and covers the entire year, i.e. will be paid for 12 months. Additional support can be awarded based on students performance. Summer stays at the international partners are possible for successful students. Basic living expenses are as follows: Lunch/ Dinner at the university cafeteria: 2TL / 3TL, monthly public transportation pass: 70TL, accommodation at the campus: 300TL.
About the Principal Investigator
Dr.-Ing. Ekenel (http://web.itu.edu.tr/ekenel/) received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in 2009. He is a recipient of a Young Investigator Grant that he was awarded within the German Excellence Initiative, with which he has founded the Facial Image Processing and Analysis (http://face.cs.kit.edu/) group at the Department of Computer Science in KIT. He has played a leading role in face analysis tasks in several large-scale European and German research projects. In 2008, he received the European Biometric Research Award. His face analysis technology has been used by several research labs and companies and has taken part in several demo and press events. He received the Best Demo Award at the IEEE International Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition in 2008. Since January 2011, he has been coordinating the Benchmarking Facial Image Analysis Technologies (BeFIT) initiative. He is the primary organizer of the BeFIT workshops 2011 and 2012. He co-organized the International Workshop on Affective Computing for Mobile HCI (
) that took place in Istanbul, Turkey. He has been on the program committee for a number of international conferences and workshops including ICCV, ACCV, FG, ICME, BTAS, and AVSS. He is the local chair of the ACM International Conference on Multimodal Interaction 2014.
